Thailand’s northernmost province: tea hills, the Mekong at the Golden Triangle and a calm, green city.
Chiang Rai is Thailand’s northernmost province, where the country meets Myanmar and Laos along the Mekong. Its capital is a calm, green city on the Kok River, with a clock tower designed by the artist Chalermchai Kositpipat and his White Temple, Wat Rong Khun, just outside town. People move here for space, cool winter mornings and gentle prices: half the houses for sale ask less than ฿3.7M. Mae Fah Luang University teaches in English, and the tea hills of Doi Mae Salong, Doi Tung’s gardens and the Golden Triangle are all easy day trips.
