The north’s horse-carriage town: teak temples, an old river market and some of the lowest prices around.
Lampang is the Lanna town that stayed quiet. It sits in the broad valley of the Wang River and is still known as the city of horse carriages, which wait for passengers where other towns have tuk-tuks. Along the old market street by the river, Kad Kong Ta, Chinese and Myanmar-style houses survive from the teak-trading years, and Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, a short drive out, is a classic of Lanna architecture. Chiang Mai is about 90 minutes away by road, flights reach Don Mueang in about 70 minutes, and a family house in town often asks around ฿2M.
