Thailand’s coldest province: misty mountains, the Phu Kradueng plateau and Chiang Khan’s wooden Mekong town.
Loei is the mountain corner of Isan, facing Laos across the Mekong and Hueang rivers, and Thailand’s coldest province: on Phu Ruea the temperature can fall below freezing in December and January. It is thinly settled, with six national parks, among them Phu Kradueng, the table mountain that became Thailand’s second national park in 1962. Thai visitors come for the cool season, the morning mist and Chiang Khan’s old wooden riverside town. For buyers it is a place for a cool-season house or a small resort rather than a city flat.
