Thailand’s gateway to Indochina: a Mekong trading town facing Savannakhet, on the road to Vietnam.
Mukdahan sits on the Mekong opposite Savannakhet, 645 km from Bangkok, and border trade has shaped it since the Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge opened in 2007. The bridge carries the East–West Economic Corridor towards Vietnam, the province is a special economic zone, and trade flows through the Indochina Market by the river. It is a multicultural place, home to eight ethnic groups, among them the Phu Thai, and to families of Vietnamese and Chinese descent. Houses are modestly priced, and the Ban Phai–Nakhon Phanom railway is being built through the province.
