A calm town below the Phu Phan hills, beside Isan’s largest natural lake, with Buddhist and Catholic roots.
Sakon Nakhon is a calm provincial town of about 76,000 people beside Nong Han, at 125 sq km the largest natural lake in north-east Thailand, with the forested Phu Phan hills to the south. It was a city of the Khmer era, and its heart is still Wat Phra That Choeng Chum, whose stupa appears on the ten-satang coin. Across the lake, Tha Rae is the largest Catholic community in Thailand. Houses cost less than in Udon Thani or Khon Kaen, the province is known for its Pon Yang Kham beef, and two airlines fly to Don Mueang.
