The south’s old capital: a World Heritage temple, Khao Luang’s forests and the quiet beaches of Khanom.
Nakhon Si Thammarat is one of Thailand’s oldest cities and the spiritual heart of the south. Its great temple, Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, with a white chedi 78 metres high, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2026. Behind the city rises Khao Luang, the highest mountain in the south, with waterfalls and the orchard village of Khiriwong; in front lies the Gulf, with quiet beaches at Sichon and Khanom. It is a provincial city of shadow puppets, nielloware and southern cooking, and the property market is local and affordable.
