The old port of the Patani sultanate: historic mosques, a fishing coast and a university town on the Gulf.
Pattani was the seat of the Patani sultanate, a Malay trading kingdom on the Gulf, and the town still carries that history. Almost nine in ten people in the province are Muslim, and many speak Pattani Malay as well as Thai. The red-brick Krue Se Mosque, centuries old and never finished, stands just outside town, and the Central Mosque and the Chinese Lim Ko Niao shrine are in the centre. Prince of Songkla University has a campus here, and fishing still shapes the coast. Several governments advise against travel to the province, and the property market is small and local.
