Thailand’s southernmost province: rubber hills, deep forest and the border town of Betong.
Yala is Thailand’s southernmost province, a green country of rubber plantations and forest on the border with Malaysia’s Kedah and Perak. Yala town is laid out around a large park with a lake, and its Central Mosque has stood for more than a century. In the far south, Betong is Thailand’s southernmost town, in the hills near the border, with hot springs, the Piyamit Tunnel and the sea of mist at Aiyoeweng, and it draws many Malaysian visitors. About four in five people are Muslim. Several governments advise against travel here, so the market is small and local.
