A quiet farming province near Khon Kaen, with Thailand’s largest dinosaur site and the Lam Pao reservoir.
Kalasin is a farming province of sticky rice and cassava between Khon Kaen and the Phu Phan hills, with a small capital of about 34,000 people, 513 km from Bangkok. It holds Phu Kum Khao, Thailand’s largest dinosaur site, where the Sirindhorn Museum shows the bones of sauropods some 120 million years old, and Fa Daet Song Yang, the largest moated site on the Khorat Plateau. The Lam Pao Dam, built in the 1960s, holds the province’s great reservoir. Life is quiet and rural, with Khon Kaen’s airport, hospitals and shops about an hour away.
