Bangkok’s west bank: canals, family estates and new rail lines, a bridge away from the old city.
Thonburi was Thailand’s capital under King Taksin from 1767 to 1782, and joined Bangkok only in 1971. Its canals still run between the houses, and it is the side of the city where families find space. Large estates line Ratchaphruek and Borommaratchachonnani beyond Pinklao; townhouses and condominiums follow Phetkasem to Bang Khae, and Rama 2 towards Samut Sakhon; Wongwian Yai and Talat Phlu keep the older streets near the river. Since 2020 the MRT Blue Line has looped through Tha Phra and Bang Khae, and the BTS reaches Bang Wa.
