Khon Kaen is the northeast’s university and medical city. About 400,000 people live in the urban area, which grew up around Khon Kaen University, the largest in the region, and its Srinagarind Hospital, where complex cases from across Isan are referred. Salaried professionals, civil servants and doctors are the main home buyers, and low-rise houses make up most of the market. Daily life is easy: a lake at the centre of town, a large Central mall, Highway 2 running north to Udon Thani and Laos, and several flights a day to Bangkok.
