The ‘Taxila of Isan’: a university town at the centre of the northeast, with Phra That Na Dun to the south.
Maha Sarakham calls itself the Taxila of Isan, after the ancient Indian seat of learning. Mahasarakham University had about 41,000 students in 2017, and with Rajabhat Mahasarakham University and a string of colleges it gives the town a young, studious rhythm that follows the academic year. The province sits at the geographic centre of the northeast, and its history runs deep: Buddhist relics found at Na Dun are enshrined in the great stupa of Phra That Na Dun. Living costs are low, and Khon Kaen is close.
