The north’s old teak town: a moated centre, timber mansions and indigo cotton on the Yom River.
Phrae grew rich on teak. The province held some of the largest teak forests in the country, and the old town inside its moat still has the timber mansions of that trade, among them Vongburi House and Khum Chao Luang, where the king and queen stayed on royal visits. It is a quiet place on the Yom River, ringed by mountains, where the blue mo hom cotton of Thung Hong is still dyed and sewn. Daily life is easy: a house in town often asks around ฿2.5M, and Den Chai, 24 km away, is the junction for the new railway to Chiang Rai.
