Chiang Mai’s quiet old neighbour: a moated Mon town, longan orchards and family houses near ฿2M.
Lamphun is older than Chiang Mai and much quieter. As Hariphunchai it was the northernmost city of the Mon kingdoms, founded by Queen Chamthewi, and the moated old town still turns around Wat Phra That Hariphunchai and its golden chedi. Today it is a small town on the Kuang River, 26 km south of Chiang Mai, among rice fields and the longan orchards the province is known for. It suits families who work in Chiang Mai but want a calmer home: houses in estates often ask around ฿2M, and trains to Chiang Mai take about 30 minutes.
