A border province of two towns: Tak on the Ping River and Mae Sot, the trading gateway to Myanmar.
Tak is two places. Tak town is a quiet provincial capital on the Ping River, 426 km north of Bangkok, where the future King Taksin served as vice-governor. Over the Doi Musoe hills, 87 km west, Mae Sot faces Myawaddy across the Moei River: Thailand’s main land gateway to Myanmar, with two Friendship Bridges, a Special Economic Zone declared in 2015 and markets of Myanmar, Karen and Chinese goods. Around them lies some of Thailand’s wildest country, from the Bhumibol Dam’s reservoir to Thi Lo Su, said to be the country’s largest waterfall.
