Thailand’s most mountainous province: misty valleys, Shan temples and Pai’s easy-going hill town.
Mae Hong Son is Thailand’s most mountainous province and its most thinly settled, with the lowest population density in the country. Forest covers 85% of it, every district borders Myanmar, and the Shan are the largest of its many peoples. Most buyers come for Pai, a small town in a river valley 146 km from Chiang Mai, with cafés, hot springs and a walking street in the high season from November to March. Mae Hong Son town, set round a lake below the hilltop Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, is quieter still.
