A remote valley on the Nan River: Lanna and Tai Lue temples, mountain roads and a UNESCO city of crafts.
Nan was an independent kingdom for centuries, and it still feels apart: a small city on the right bank of the Nan River, between forested ranges, with Laos to the north and east. Its temples mix Lanna and Tai Lue styles, Wat Phumin and the viewpoint of Doi Samer Dao are its best-loved sights, and in 2025 UNESCO named Nan a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art. Visitors are almost all Thai, and many return. People buy here for slow living: a house with land, mountain roads to Doi Phu Kha, and flights to Don Mueang.
