A young, quiet province below the Phu Phan Kham hills: King Naresuan’s shrine, lotus ponds and cave temples.
Nong Bua Lamphu is one of Thailand’s newest provinces, split from Udon Thani in 1993, but its history is old: King Naresuan camped here in 1574 on his way to Vientiane, and his shrine still faces the town’s great lotus pond. The province is quiet and green, with the Phu Kao–Phu Phan Kham hills, cave temples such as Tham Erawan, and Wat Tham Klong Phen, home of the revered monk Luang Pu Khao. Udon Thani, with its airport and railway station, is 46 km away.
