Thailand’s quiet south-west corner: Koh Lipe’s white beaches, the Tarutao islands and a geopark.
Satun is Thailand’s quiet south-west corner, a Muslim-majority province of limestone hills, mangroves and islands on the border with Malaysia. Most people come for Koh Lipe, a small island of white beaches on the edge of Tarutao National Park, about 90 minutes by speedboat from Pak Bara. Satun town is calm and green, with a ferry to Langkawi, and the limestone caves around it are part of a UNESCO Global Geopark, listed in 2018. The property market is small and local, and island land is often contested, so this is a place for careful buyers and long stays.
