Lower Isan’s river city on the Mun, with the Mekong and the cliffs of Pha Taem an easy drive east.
Ubon Ratchathani, the ‘royal city of the lotus’, grew up on the north bank of the Mun River in the late 18th century, and Warin Chamrap across the water is effectively part of the same town. This is the province where Thailand meets Laos and Cambodia, and where the Mun joins the Mekong at Khong Chiam. Life is unhurried: Thung Si Mueang park in the centre, the candle festival each July, the forest monasteries of Ajahn Chah’s tradition. Universities, CentralPlaza and a regional hospital cover what daily life needs.
