A small Isan town on the Chi River, famous for its May rocket festival, jasmine rice and khit pillows.
Yasothon is one of Isan’s smaller provinces, split from Ubon Ratchathani in 1972, and its town sits on the Chi River among rice fields. Once a year it fills up: on the second weekend of May the Bun Bang Fai rocket festival takes over Phaya Thaen Park, a rain-making rite turned into the region’s biggest party. The rest of the year is quiet, built around Wat Maha That and its Phra That Anon, the old quarter of Ban Singha Tha, jasmine rice and the khit pillows woven at Ban Si Than.
