A lake town in the heart of Isan: Bueng Phalan Chai, giant Buddhas and the jasmine rice of Thung Kula Ronghai.
Roi Et means ‘one hundred and one’, a misreading of the eleven gates of the old city of Saket Nakhon, and the town still gathers round its centre: Bueng Phalan Chai, a lake with the city pillar shrine on an island. Since 2020 the 123-metre Roi Et Tower has stood beside it, the tallest viewing tower in Isan. Out in the province are the hilltop Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkhon, the rocket festival of Suwannaphum and the great plain of Thung Kula Ronghai, now prime jasmine rice country.
