Rice country between the Chao Phraya and the Noi, home of the Great Buddha, just over an hour from Bangkok.
Ang Thong, whose name means ‘gold basin’, is a small, low-lying province about 110 km north of Bangkok, spread across the plain between the Chao Phraya and Noi rivers. There are no mountains or forests, only rice fields, canals and temples: the Great Buddha of Thailand at Wat Muang, the tallest statue in the country, a 50-metre reclining Buddha at Wat Khun Inthapramun and the banyan-wrapped ruins of Wat Sang Kratai. It is the home of likay folk theatre and of the court-doll makers of Bang Sadet. With Ayutthaya half an hour away, it suits buyers who want country quiet close to the city.
