Rice country on the Tha Chin River: a century-old market, King Naresuan’s battlefield and Thai country music.
Suphan Buri is the rice bowl west of Ayutthaya, a flat green province cut by the Tha Chin River, which locals call the Suphan River. It is proud of its past: King Naresuan’s famous elephant duel is on the provincial seal, and U Thong traded with China and the Gulf more than a thousand years ago. Banharn Silpa-archa, prime minister in 1995–96, transformed his home town with schools, public works and a 123-metre tower. Life is unhurried, and most homes are detached houses on their own land, typically ฿1.7M–3.7M.
