The old royal capital on its river island: temple ruins, river prawns and family homes an hour from Bangkok.
Ayutthaya was the capital of Siam from 1351 until 1767, and the ruins on its river island are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The province is also one of Thailand’s great factory belts, with five industrial estates and almost half a million workers. That mix shapes the housing. Most homes for sale are townhouses and family houses on estates, in the town and around Bang Pa-in and Wang Noi, close to the factories and Highway 1. The island keeps the markets, temples and riverside restaurants, and the train to Krung Thep Aphiwat takes about an hour.
