A small Chao Phraya town of rice, pomelos and birds beside Thailand’s first dam, 2½ hours from Bangkok.
Chai Nat sits on the Chao Phraya about 190 km north of Bangkok, where the river leaves the upper plain. South of town the Chao Phraya Dam, finished in 1957 as Thailand’s first, feeds the irrigation canals that water the rice fields of the lower valley. The province is small and agricultural, known for its khao taengkwa pomelos, a bird park with Asia’s largest aviary, and hillside temples such as Wat Thammamun that look over the river. It suits buyers who want a quiet riverside town within an easy drive of Bangkok.
