Where the Ping and the Nan meet to become the Chao Phraya: a trading city, three hours from Bangkok.
Nakhon Sawan stands where the Ping and the Nan rivers meet to form the Chao Phraya, about 240 km north of Bangkok. The confluence, Pak Nam Pho, made it the trading town of the upper plain, and after the Bowring Treaty the centre of the rice and teak trade. Its large Thai-Chinese community still holds a Chinese New Year festival that has run for more than a century. Today it is a practical regional city with a big hospital and universities, and just east of town lies Bueng Boraphet, Thailand’s largest freshwater wetland.
