A slow river town of raft houses on the Sakae Krang, with World Heritage forest to the west.
Uthai Thani is a small, green province about 200 km north-west of Bangkok, a little off the main road north. Its town sits on the Sakae Krang River just upstream of the Chao Phraya, where families still live in raft houses and raise fish in floating baskets. Half the province is forest, and in the west Huai Kha Khaeng, home to tigers and elephants, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also the hometown of the father of King Rama I, honoured in a pavilion on Khao Sakae Krang above the town. Life here is slow and close to nature.
