Thailand’s fruit and gem province: an old river town, orchards and quiet beaches.
Chanthaburi is Thailand’s fruit and gem province. Its orchards grow durian, mangosteen and rambutan, and dealers trade rubies and sapphires on Si Chan Road at the weekend. The town sits on the Chanthaburi River: the Chanthaboon Waterfront keeps a kilometre of old wooden and Sino-Portuguese houses, and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is the largest church in Thailand. South of town, Chao Lao and Laem Sadet are long, quiet beaches, and the mountains inland hold waterfalls and national parks. People buy here for a house with land, an orchard or a calm place by the sea.
