A quiet Ping River town inside Sukhothai-era walls, with World Heritage ruins and forest parks to the west.
Kamphaeng Phet means ‘diamond wall’, and the laterite ramparts of its old city still stand on the east bank of the Ping River, about halfway between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. With Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai it forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site, yet it sees far fewer visitors. The town is calm and green, with a palm-lined riverside promenade, the forest monasteries of the Aranyik zone and the small, sweet egg bananas it is known for. To the west, Khlong Lan and Mae Wong national parks climb into the Dawna range.
