The 13th-century royal capital: UNESCO-listed ruins, Loy Krathong by lamplight and a calm new town nearby.
Sukhothai was the capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom from 1238 to 1438, and its ruins are among Thailand’s great sights: 193 monuments over 70 km², listed by UNESCO in 1991 together with Si Satchanalai and Kamphaeng Phet. The modern town, New Sukhothai, is about 12 km away and stays small and unhurried. People come for the history, for cycling among the ruins and for Loy Krathong, which brings tens of thousands to the historical park each year. Some stay: houses often ask under ฿3M, life is slow and Bangkok is a short flight.
