River Kwai country: wartime history, raft houses and waterfalls, with forest all the way to Myanmar.
Kanchanaburi is Thailand’s third-largest province, a wall of forest and mountain running to the Myanmar border, with 61.5% of its land under forest. The Khwae Noi and Khwae Yai, the River Kwai, meet at Kanchanaburi town to form the Mae Klong, and the town keeps the memory of the Death Railway at its bridge and war cemeteries. Visitors, almost all of them Thai, come for raft houses, waterfalls and national parks such as Erawan and Sai Yok. The M81 motorway, fully open since January 2026, has brought the province much closer to the capital.
