A quiet river province of rice, lotus and pomelos between the Nan and the Yom, home of the crocodile legend.
Phichit is the flat, fertile heart of the lower north, about 350 km by road from Bangkok, where the Nan and Yom rivers run side by side through rice fields and lotus ponds before joining the Chao Phraya. It is the setting of the Thai epic of Krai Thong and the crocodile king Chalawan, and the crocodile is still its emblem. Life is small-town and agricultural: pomelo orchards around Pho Prathap Chang, boat races on the Nan each September, and the big lake of Bueng Si Fai just south of town. Houses with land cost less here than in Phitsanulok or Nakhon Sawan.
